"Rya Hamilton is one of the most passionate teachers I have ever worked with. Mrs. Hamilton goes above and beyond to meet all of the needs of each of her students.  I could not ask for a more dedicated teacher and colleague.  She is a blessing to our school and community."
-Samantha Phegley, Principal

About Mrs. Hamilton: A native of Texas, Rya Hamilton has dedicated 18 years to teaching students in the Southwest School District. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Indiana State University, and began her career teaching kindergarten at Carlisle Elementary. For the past 10 years, she has taught second grade at Sullivan Elementary.

Why she enjoys teaching: “I enjoy teaching, but not just teaching content,” said Mrs. Hamilton. “I enjoy guiding them in how to make better choices, how to be a good friend, how to be more responsible, how to communicate with others, how to treat others with respect, how to become more independent learners and how to make the right choices even when it isn't easy.”

She added, “When students come into second grade they are still learning how to learn.  I try to meet each student where THEY are then help them to continue making progress, knowing that they are individuals and do not learn at the same rate. I love it when past students run up to tell me how their day is going, to give me high fives, hugs, or a smile.  It sure makes my heart happy!”

Favorite teaching moments: “My favorite moments are when I watch students developing confidence in themselves—they start raising their hand to answer questions, they answer with a little louder voice, they walk to the board with their head held a little higher, they choose to pick up a book to read, they ask if they can help others who may be struggling, and they become cheerleaders for their classmates,” she explained.

How she enjoys spending her free time: “I have three very active kids: Elly 16, Audrey 14, and Ty 11.  When I am not teaching, I am usually at one of their sporting events- Volleyball, Tennis, Track, Baseball, Football, Wrestling, or Basketball. If I am not at one of these events, I like to relax with my family at home or on the beach.”
