Students Say Hello with a Handshake

Students Say Hello with a Handshake
Posted on 08/27/2018
Third grade teacher Jackie Ridge has a special way of welcoming her students every morning. Each student created their own handshake to share with Mrs. Ridge before entering her classroom each day.

"I hope that by doing these handshakes every day, I can build a relationship with my students. It's also a fun way to let someone know they are special," said Mrs. Ridge. "You never know what kind of night someone had or if they had a stressful morning, and sometimes you just need someone to look you in the eye and connect with you. That's ultimately what I wish to achieve with these handshakes."

Principal Samantha Phegley explained that the handshakes are one way SES implements Social Emotional Learning.

"When students feel connected to their peers and teacher, they will be more motivated to learn and regulate their own behavior better," she said. "The handshakes create that moment or opportunity for connection between the teacher and the students."

Mrs. Ridge's morning routine is one of many ways the teachers at SES connect with their students each day to make learning fun!
